Leawood's Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute (KCOI) Celebrates 25 Years of Patient Care
Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute (KCOI)—Kansas City’s only orthopedic specialty hospital—is honored to celebrate 25 years of patient care this year. Opening its doors for the first time on Jan. 14, 2000, the hospital has served more than 565,000 patients across all services with its unparalleled expertise in orthopedic and musculoskeletal surgery, sports medicine and rehabilitation.
“Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute is a hub for elite care in our region, with 34 surgeons and physicians. Each year, the hospital sees approximately 80,000 patients come through its doors for services including inpatient surgery, orthopedic urgent care, outpatient surgery, rehab and more,” said Gene Austin, CEO of KCOI. “It is an honor for us to play a meaningful role in the health and wellness of our patients. Our expert care raises the bar on clinical outcomes and compassionate, quality care.”
All KCOI orthopedic physicians are providers with partner clinic Kansas City Orthopedic Alliance (KCOA), the largest independently owned orthopedic specialty practice in the Kansas City metro area.
Dr. Charles Rhoades, then president of Dickson-Diveley, saw a growing need for a dedicated physical patient care location to better serve the Kansas City region. In 1998, he, together with other like-minded physicians, began the work to create Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute, bringing orthopedic and musculoskeletal surgery plus ancillary services under one, state-of-the-art roof. The hospital opened its doors in 2000.
In 2018, KCOI opened a 22,000-square-foot expansion, nearly doubling its original footprint. The expansion created room for additional physician offices, inpatient rooms and a new home for KCOI’s Urgent Care.
Today, KCOI is home to 34 physicians and surgeons on staff, operating with 17 in-patient suites and eight operating rooms. KCOI’s Ortho Urgent Care is open for walk-in appointments Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
