Logo Totes, Map Totes and Event Bags: Ordering Custom Tote Bags in Leawood

If you want personalized tote bags for an event or a promotion, you can order them from a local screen printer, a promotional products distributor, an online design-and-print service, or a print-on-demand marketplace. Which one fits depends on how many bags you need, how soon, and how much control you want over the design. Whichever route you take, check the bag style and fabric, whether you can print on both sides, what a proof or preview looks like before you pay, and whether shipping is included. For runs you design yourself, online services that sell printed tote bags let you place artwork and pick a bag color in a single session.

Your options, compared

• Local screen printer or embroiderer. The right call for large runs, tight deadlines, specific fabrics and multi-color logos that need exact matching. You can see a sample bag and pick up the order. Leawood Chamber of Commerce members can check the chamber's events and member calendar to meet local providers at networking events, or ask the chamber for member referrals.

• Promotional products distributor. Useful when you want a catalog of bag styles, from basic cotton to zippered canvas, and someone to manage production. Pricing usually rewards volume.

• Online design-and-print service. Good for short runs and artwork-heavy designs, such as a map or illustration. Adobe Express is one example. Its tote page lists two bag styles, a choice of colors, and printing on one or both sides, with orders shipped in 100% recyclable packaging. Delivery is limited to the US, UK, Australia and Canada.

• Print-on-demand marketplace. Built for selling tote designs to customers one at a time. Good if you want fans of your brand to buy the bag; not built for stocking an event table.

When an online service isn't the right fit: if you need 500 bags with a Pantone-matched logo by next Friday, want a specific heavyweight canvas, or plan to hand out embroidered bags at a client event, call a local printer or a distributor.

How do I put a custom logo on a tote bag?

Start with the file. A vector logo (SVG, EPS or PDF) scales cleanly to any size. If you only have a PNG or JPG, make sure it's high resolution, at least 300 DPI at the size it will print, and has a transparent background so a white box doesn't appear on a colored bag.

Then think about placement and contrast:

• Size. A logo centered on the front of a standard tote usually reads best somewhere between 8 and 10 inches wide. Small logos get lost on fabric.

• Contrast. Dark ink on a natural or light bag is the safest choice. On a dark bag, use a light or white version of your logo.

• Simplicity. Thin lines and very small text can fill in on fabric. If your logo has a tagline, consider dropping it for the bag.

• Back side. Printing both sides lets you put the logo on the front and a website or a short line on the back.

Can I design a tote online and see it before I order?

Most online services show a preview of your design on the bag color you choose. Use it to check three things: that nothing important sits too close to the seams or handles, that colors still contrast on the bag you picked, and that text is readable at actual size. A preview isn't the same as a physical proof, so for a large order, ask for a single sample first.

Online tools are especially useful for designs built from photos, maps or illustrations, which are harder to prepare for screen printing because each color typically needs its own screen. If your design has many colors or a photo, ask a local printer whether it would be printed digitally, which can change the price and the feel of the print.

How do I make a tote with a map or city theme for a travel brand?

Map designs are popular for travel agencies, tour operators, hotels and real estate firms. A few practical points:

• Use art you have the right to print. Many commercial maps and online map screenshots are copyrighted. The US Geological Survey says that USGS topographic maps are generally in the public domain and can be reproduced for any purpose, with exceptions for some commercially licensed data in newer maps, and it asks you to credit the USGS as the source.

• Simplify. A full topographic map has too much detail for a bag. Trace the main roads, a river or a neighborhood outline and drop the rest. Two or three colors look cleaner than ten.

• Add a landmark or a pin. A single marker on your office location or a favorite destination gives the design a focal point.

• Keep it evergreen. Leave off seasonal dates or a specific tour so the bag stays useful for years.

For a travel brand, a front-and-back layout works well: the map on the front and the brand name and website on the back.

Planning quantity and timing for a promotional event

Say a Leawood travel agency is sponsoring a table at a chamber networking evening with about 120 guests and wants to promote a group trip:

• Bags: give a tote only to people who stop and talk. Plan on 40 to 50 bags, not 120.

• Inserts: a trip flyer and a business card in each bag.

• Seals and giveaways: small stickers with the agency logo to seal the inserts and to hand out.

For the stickers, custom sticker printing services commonly offer small squares and rectangles; Adobe's page lists a 1.5-inch square and a 4.5 by 2.7-inch rectangle, plus a custom size, with a preview before ordering.

A backward timeline from the event:

• Five weeks out: finalize the map artwork and get approval from the agency owner.

• Four weeks out: order one sample bag, or ask a local printer for a proof.

• Three weeks out: place the full order.

• One week out: bags in hand, stuffed and boxed.

Putting totes to work in Leawood

Leawood is a Kansas suburb of Kansas City (the chamber office is at 13451 Briar in Leawood, Kansas), and its mix of professional and medical offices, upscale retail and dining gives totes several uses.

The Leawood Chamber of Commerce runs regular networking, including After Hours events, ribbon cuttings and New Member Orientation sessions, and its Young Professionals Group meets monthly for Cars & Coffee. A clean branded tote is a natural fit for a new-member welcome kit or a ribbon-cutting giveaway. The Economic Development Council connects members with city, county and regional leaders, and Leadership Leawood runs a five-month program from winter into spring. A cohort tote with a Leawood map on it would suit either group.

Arts audiences are another fit. The city's Leawood Arts Council hosts art shows and receptions, children's concerts and jazz concerts, nearly all of them free. Galleries and restaurants that sponsor those programs could hand totes to attendees.

For help pricing a promotional budget, the chamber's business resources page lists local support, and the Kansas SBDC at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park offers free, confidential advising by appointment, including on marketing.

Frequently asked questions

How big should my logo be on a tote bag?

On a standard tote, a front logo about 8 to 10 inches wide usually reads well. Check the preview or a sample before ordering in volume.

Can I print on both sides of a tote?

Many services offer it. It's useful for putting a logo on one side and a website or message on the other.

Is it cheaper to order totes locally or online?

Small runs with detailed artwork are often simpler online. Large runs with a simple one-color logo usually favor a local screen printer. Get a quote from both.

Can I use a map I found online on my tote?

Only if you have the right to reproduce it. Public domain sources such as USGS topographic maps are a safe starting point.
